Funded Jan 24, 2023I am so excited to write to you about Born a Crime in my classroom. I've been reading the book with my students for a month now, and I am happy to say that they are hooked! Each day they excitedly ask if we can read more, and there is nothing else that could make this English teacher happier.
Books allow students the opportunity to learn about new people, places, and cultures and Born a Crime has really delivered in those areas.
We started off by identifying South Africa's location and learning about it's geography, culture, and politics, including apartheid and the diamond industry. My students began the unit without knowing what apartheid was to comparing this system to segregation in the United States. To immerse ourselves in the country, we went on a virtual tour of Johannesburg and Cape Town and saw famous sites and landmarks. As we read the anecdotes we studied languages, names, and family structures. There is still more to come as we finish reading the novel.
Also, students in my classes are working on their English and this novel has introduced them to so much new vocabulary without being inaccessible. Noah's incredible stories and humorous tone had them laughing out loud and wanting to read more after each chapter. My students and I thank you so much for supporting our learning.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Olivas
