Financial Literacy for Seniors

As a Senior English teacher, I chose not to teach what is traditional in English 12: British Literature. I have worked hard to make this course relevant, interesting, and impactful for my students. To this end, we are spending their final eight weeks of high school on an "adulting" unit. The students have provided input as to what they want to learn about, and we are covering topics such as home buying, investing for retirement, insurance, taxes, employment skills, and financial literacy.

In order to provide the students with resources for financial literacy, I turned to Donors Choose. With your generosity, I was able to purchase plenty of student copies of the book 'I Want More Pizza', which is a book about financial literacy written for young adults. There are online resources available, and I have added a study guide and a home buying simulation. My hope is that students will feel more comfortable with their financial decisions as they enter adulthood and life on their own. This has been a fantastic experience; it is so nice to teach something I know will be used.”
