  • Reading Into the New School Year

    My students are so thankful and thrilled to have received the storyworks and scholastic news magazines. The lessons that are included are cause and effect, summary, opinion writing, comprehension questions, main idea and detail, etc.. These are just a few reading skills that we target in the 4th grade. The students not only build on their reading skills but also connect current events within their learning. The students also refer to these stories in other contents learned.

    We use these texts during guided reading groups and I assign them weekly for their reading homework. I also incorporate the storyworks articles in my groups where I meet with my students in their Lexile groups. Students always look forward to these texts and ask to read for the readers theaters which build on their reading fluency.

    Most of my students prefer reading these texts rather than ones on other online platforms. There is something special about opening up a magazine and reading and viewing the images.
