Kids in the Kitchen!

Funded Oct 20, 2022

Our program, Bearkatz Open Classroom, serves students that are at risk of failing or dropping out of school or that have difficulty attending the regular high school setting. We instruct our students in all academic areas, however, we also teach them in areas that include real-world skills and experiences. For this project, we focused on healthy food choices, budgeting, comparison shopping, and food preparation. With your generous donation, we were able to purchase several supplies for our kitchen which has made it possible for them to have hands-on experiences that will provide life-long benefit. They were very excited to have quality cooking utensils, dishes, and prep tools to work with! For the project in the photos, our students had to "shop" online at Wal-Mart for a meal composed of homemade pizza, tater tots, and two desserts. They then compared their total purchases to determine where they could save money, for example, by choosing generics over brand names and buying the right quantities of each product. During the cooking part of the project, all of the students participated in the many tasks required to prepare the meal. Part of the assignment was to make two types of pizza using prepared crusts and crust mixes, and then comparing the cost and convenience. Our students did a wonderful job in every aspect of this project: the "shopping," the preparation of a very tasty meal, and in the comparison and cost analysis. Our students will continue to benefit from using these kitchen supplies, as will our future students for many years to come, because of your decision to donate to our project and we extend to you our heart-felt appreciation.”
