Colors in The World
Funded Aug 9, 2022The multicultural crayons have been a great tool for my students to use to express details in the drawings. My students use them daily to complete their drawings that corresponds to their daily journal writing. It encourages them to be more detail oriented because it helps them be a little more precise with their color selection to accurately convey what they mean to and want to. Another project that they were especially excited to use these crayons for was a "Guess Who?" project. In this project, students had to draw a self portrait with hands covering their face and include clues about themselves. Then other students would look at the self portrait and use the clues to guess whose work it was. It was so heartwarming to see each student feel included and not just have brown, orange, and yellow crayons to only choose from to represent their skin tones in their drawings. It was nice to hear "I don't have to mix the orange and yellow crayon, because this one is like my skin color!"
My class was squealing with joy when they first saw the materials. Their grins were spread wide on their faces and eyes were open wide with excitement. They were excited to use them right away to complete their work.
My next steps for my students on classroom lessons and projects are to continue to build on that feeling that each student is truly special in their own skin and they should be proud of who they are and what they look like. I want to continue to instill that feeling within each of my students that they should embrace their own beauty instead of trying to be like someone else.
Thank you for your contribution to help me do the work that I do with my class daily.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Lay
