Understanding and Facing African-Caribbean Colonial Histories Through "A Small Place"
Funded Jun 24, 2023Thank you so much for supporting my project! Students greatly benefited form reading "A Small Place" as it challenged them to think about themes related to colonialism and how to humanize experiences of people that are still dealing with this impacts in the Caribbean and the world at large.
They also were challenged by the complex language of the text, that fostered their critical thinking and writing skills.
Students left the unit with a profound sense of empathy and how to think more deeply about our unit topic.”

Empowering Asian American Students and Allies With Ocean Vuong
Funded Jul 15, 2023This book is truly a thoughtful engagement around identity, trauma and how to overcome it. Thank you so much for bringing such humanizing insights to my school!
Students were able to see themselves represented and learn a lot about how to be empathetic towards other cultures. Through Ocean's prose and themes, students also developed a stronger sense of literary analysis and critical thinking skills.
This book also focused on supporting Asian American communities and their unique challenges as well as highlighting the beauty of their culture.”

Empowering Asian American Students and Allies With Ocean Vuong
Funded Sep 6, 2022Thank you so much for funding "On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous" by Ocean Vuong in my classroom. During our literary analysis of the text, students grappled with themes related to gender, sexuality, immigration, belonging, self-worth, mental health/trauma, Asian American identity, and the journey to finding beauty and pride in a family that is broken but refuses to let themselves be defined by it. They engaged in small and large group discussions, wrote reflections about connections to their own life, and academic essays that allowed them to trace the multiple strategies the author used to develop his central ideas. I saw so much insight, connection, empathy and growth in the class as readers and critical thinkers. So many of our students saw themselves, as children of immigrants, in the pages of Vuong's work, and many others found a way to be more aware and thoughtful about difference.”
