Exploring Art with Middle School Students

Funded Oct 19, 2022

Thank you so much for your contributions to my classroom. The students were able to explore a new art medium thanks to your generous donations. Students were able to create unique art prints using black glue and metallic watercolor. Students were encouraged to embrace the abstract art approach. This was a great experience for students considering they are so limited by the boundaries of realism sometimes that they were able to express themselves in a non-representational way by using such a unique approach to printmaking.

Students were very excited when they saw the black glue. Most students did not know black glue was a thing and so be able to use it was very exciting. The metallic watercolors were new for all students. The bright, shimmering colors really brought their prints to life and allowed for students to be as creative as they wanted with their color choices. The black paper that we used was the perfect surface for the student's beautiful art pieces.

We are currently working on a black history month project inspired by the artist Charles McGee. Students are drawing 12 different black and white patterns on a piece of paper and then cutting them out as strips. Students are then building a 3-d paper sculpture using their patterned strips. The results are beautiful and allow students to work three dimensionally as well as be exposed to an artist they might not know about.

Thank you again for all of your support.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Martin
