My classroom will consist of twenty-six amazing fourth graders! My students come into my classroom with a wide range of skills and interests and a wide variety of personalities. Meeting both the academic and emotional well-being of my students is my top priority. I strive to provide them with not just a stronghold on the fourth grade standards, but also I aim to provide them with a high level of emotional intelligence. By building a strong classroom community, my students are encouraged to take risks and embrace diversity. By using picture books to teach social-emotional skills, my students will be able to analyze how the characters in the stories deal with a variety of social situations. Sometimes it is too difficult for students to look inwardly at such a young age, so using literature can be a great way to discuss these essential life skills in a classroom setting. Picture books that deal with social-emotional learning can spark meaningful conversations. By beginning the school year reading these types of books, I will be able to create a community of learners that can support each other academically, emotionally, and socially. Students will hopefully take what they learned while analyzing the characters in the story to help them navigate their own social situations.
