Learning to Read
Funded Aug 9, 2022These Scholastic books have made a huge impact on my classroom of elementary students with autism!
Some of my students are just learning their letters and others are already reading. It was challenging to interest all 8 students in one book as some students only attend to a story when the book is very close or in their hands. We never had enough copies of one book to interest and engage all students.
These non-fiction books are about activities and experiences with which my students are familiar – and that helps maintain interest. There are rebus books at all different reading levels (from B to F) so that I am able to target the reading goals of individual students. Plus, having a copy for each student to hold while I read aloud permits each student to either follow along with the printed words/drawings or just enjoy the vivid photographs.
My pictures attached demonstrate a recent experience with "POP the Bubbles!" Every child loves bubbles! I was able to include a hands-on element while reading this story which made it especially enjoyable.
We look forward to many happy reading experiences with our new Scholastic books Thank you so very much for making this possible.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Janet

We will print - in bright and vibrant color! - the visual materials our students need to fully participate in learning activities and communicate their wants and needs. It truly takes a village and we are so grateful that you will be part of ours. We could not do it without you.”
