Library In Need of Diversity
Funded Aug 10, 2022Each Monday morning students carefully and purposefully load their book tubs with just-right books to sustain their independent reading throughout the week. There is no better buzz than the buzz of authentic, unscripted, literary conversations between 7 and 8 year olds as they recommend books, characters, and series to their friends!
Since the first day we cut the ribbon to open our classroom library, our library has been a source of exploration, excitement, respect, and love. We have more books than ever geared towards boys, children of color, and students reading below grade level. The needs of our diverse population are being met with eagerness to pick up stories with characters on the cover that look like them and stories that are relevant.
As we embark on our 8th week of school, reading time has become the best time of day. Adding diversity, current titles, and lower level books (that look exactly like higher level books) has provided choice to even the most challenged reader. After 15 years of teaching, this brings me so much joy and peace of mind. Everyone has a book in their hands that will help them grow and learn to love reading.
We thank you for helping us fulfill this mission of matching books to readers and, in turn, helping each child feel the awesomeness of reading books of their choosing. It's going to be a great year!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Seidenglanz
