My gifted students are 8- to 9-years-old and come from middle class families. Our school is located in a middle class neighborhood where many students live. They grow up with many advantages and often want for little. Unfortunately, this environment also produces children who don't learn how to be self sufficient, responsible, and self-reliant. In this difficult economic time, it isn't uncommon for these professional parents to lose their jobs. The children struggle with the economic impact this has on the family, thus having a very difficult time adjusting and coping. I believe it would benefit them greatly to understand about working to earn and learning how to budget and manager money. Such an opportunity will provide these students with real world situations requiring real world problem solving allowing them to learn in the best way possible.
