Reading as Entertainment
Funded Sep 20, 2023Thank you so much for funding my reading project.
I teach 5th grade and many of my students are quick to say, "I don't like reading." As a teacher, mother, and lover of books and good stories, this saddens me. I continue to try and find THE book that is going to hook a student. I really try to get them started on a series so they can just pick up the next one.
In recent years, my students are more and more inclined to read Graphic Novels. I am trying to build my class library with sets of these novels in the hopes of hooking more readers. Your funding helped me do just that. I had a little boy who picked up the first Wings of Fire, proceeded to read through the set I had, and then proudly announced that he was getting the next set for Christmas. These are the moments we teachers strive for, and your donations made this one happen.”

Do STEAM
Funded Oct 7, 2022Throughout the school year your donations helped me create many hands on, STEAM activities for my 5th graders. During our Land Forms Unit, we used the modeling clay to create models of the layers of the Earth. During our Energy Unit we used the box fan, straws, paper, and tape to create sail cars. Each quarter we make self portraits using many of the things you have donated: watercolor paper; fine tip sharpies, and hot glue. We have also learned how to do Cat's Cradle, and make origami dogs and cats.
Each time I pull out my bins of STEAM supplies may class is eager to know what we will be doing. The simple act of creating, sparks excitement and curiosity. ALWAYS.
As we head in to the end of the year we will make Kazoo's using paper towel rolls, wax paper, and rubber bands to learn about how vibration creates sound and we will end the year with more collaborative activities such has the tallest pipe cleaner tower.
Thank you for helping me bring joy and creativity into my classroom!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Burkhart
