Future Engineers Building STEM Fun!

Help me give my students the ability to experience STEM hands on problem solving and machine creation. Building these kits will also help the understanding of solar power and what it can provide for the environment.

  • There Is Energy to Be Had All Around Us!

    Funded Apr 17, 2024

Thank you so much for the supplies for "There is Energy to Be Had All Around Us". The supplies provided allowed for an excellent hands on opportunity to create energy to power assorted appliances (e.g. turn on a light, run a fan). In doing so, the students gained a greater appreciation for how energy is created and how much power can be needed and produced given their effort and the item in question since some items would need more than others. In more detail to what we were doing, students used the hand crank, the battery, and a solar panel to create energy and track the amount of effort needed and power created (e.g. assorted wattage).

Students were excited about using hands on materials and engaged and enjoyed using the wire clamps and connections. Multiple comments, questions and answers were the result of this interest as the students gained new knowledge and appreciation in a field and with resources they had not had access to before.

Following up, we will covering and digging deeper into the differences and advantages/disadvantages of renewable versus non-renewable energy. This will be done with various curriculum, including text, online, videos, and return interaction with the equipment donated. Thanks for an excellent educational experience!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kelly

  • Life Is Not a Spectator's Sport!

    Funded Oct 23, 2023

Thanks for the generous donation that provided the supplies for my 6th Grade Science Students. As a district we use Amplify as our main source of curriculum, and to be able to supplement the material with hands-on materials like your donation provided allowed for a much deeper understanding of the material, in addition to a more entertaining and inquisitive setting for all the students. It is with the utmost thanks and appreciation that the supplies we used were able to be provided.

The units we were emphasizing and covering were: thermal energy, weather patterns, and Earth's changing climate. I titled this "Life's not a spectator sport!" and , in fact, funding for the equipment you provided was not present so to be able to put these materials into the students hands and watch them use them and learn was very exciting and appreciated by both the staff and student, but even more importantly, it truly increased participation and enjoyment!

The supplies you provided included a Carolina.com booklet with worksheets covering Earth weather systems and climate change. These were "combined" with a climate and weather kit to discover and track wind and ocean currents and how heat impacts them both. Also, 2 barometers were provided to watch the impact air pressure has on weather and how the changes that occur correlate with the weather we are experiencing at any given time. Furthermore, a weather science kit that provided a mini observatory to show how weather "works" and how clouds develop, and seeing the water cycle and how it "happens". There were also several Eisco anemometers the students were able to use to observe and track the speed and motion of wind on a daily basis and record its changes. Digging deeper into some topic matter, the students put to great use the Carolina.com loss of biodiversity kit and how using it was able to show the impact on their "science worlds" and daily lives. Lastly as it relates to supplies, thanks for the small kits on acid rain and how it impacts plants and our water supply as given that we have had a rainy stretch this fall/early winter there was plenty of sampling to be done!! Finally, the ability of my students to truly see/touch/experience the different aspects of their curriculum material was tangible and enjoyable to myself as a teacher, but more importantly to them as students. The pictures that I have submitted have hopefully highlighted this as well.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kelly

  • Let's Keep The Ball Rolling!

    Funded Jul 24, 2011

I can not thank you enough for your generous gift to our 8th grade science department. Science is a wonderful subject but it can be overwhelming at times. Allowing students to experience the different concepts through hands-on activities helps to make a strong connection for the student, while also building excitement and interest. The materials fit perfectly into so many of our state standards, and creates a great way to pull several different concepts together.

These kits also allow the students to do some 'experimenting' on their own. I have truly enjoyed watching the students go about 'solving' the day's activity. It was amazing to see several of my 'quiet' students, step up and take on the role of leader, as they helped their group get the assignment done.

Like many schools the budget for such kits is becoming smaller and smaller. Without your help my students would not embrace science with such enthusiasm. This year close to 200 students will use the kits for several different activities, and they will be used over and over again every year.

Your generous gift has allowed me to spark some real interest in science, and for that I can not thank you enough. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kelly

My school is an inner city school, we like so many schools are faced with the struggles of balancing budgets while still providing our students with the proper materials. Materials that not only present the different concepts they must learn but ones that can actively engage the child and create interest in their own learning. The materials I have listed will provide my students with the opportunity to explore key physical concepts and allow them to have fun while doing it. The students will be able to see how science is at 'work' all around them.
