My ten students are 18-22 years of age and attend a transition program in a K-12 school district. They all have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, some with physical disabilities as well. A focus of the program is teaching these students to access the community. They are learning to use public transportation. They have opened bank accounts and are learning to budget and keep track of their own money. They have paid and volunteer jobs. In the fall, they will take a class at a local community college. Because of budget cuts to adult services for adults with disabilities, the more skills we can give these students before they leave the K-12 system at age 22, the more successful and productive they will be as adults, regardless of the availability of adult services.
