Middle School Spring Art Showcase
Funded May 8, 2024The supplies from DonorsChoose played a crucial role in creating an exceptional art showcase for my deserving middle schoolers. The doubled-up presentation boards served as sturdy gallery walls, displaying vibrant artworks, while the Command adhesive secured the mural and canvases beautifully. The large paper cutter was essential in preparing the paper for students to create their artwork, and the black paper roll provided a perfect backdrop for their mural.
The STEAM Fest 2024 turned out to be a wonderful event. This art showcase was featured alongside the Band and Robotics presentations during our school's Open House, making it a popular spot for students, teachers, and parents alike. Many art students proudly brought their parents and siblings to enjoy the exhibit and participate in the ongoing Drawing Contest.
The projects your generosity impacted include Color Wheels, Texture Monsters, Linear Perspective Cities, Collage Portraits, Mediums Grid, Mandalas, Symbolizing Logos, and a Spirited Away group mural. Each project showcased the students' creativity and learning: Color Wheels displayed primary and secondary colors through personalized symbols, Texture Monsters combined realism and surrealism, and Linear Perspective Cities demonstrated a blend of science, math, and artistic imagination. Collage Portraits used sustainable newspaper to create unique backdrops, while the Mediums Grid explored different art materials by enlarging reference photos. Mandalas focused on radial symmetry, Symbolizing Logos tapped into graphic design, and the Spirited Away mural honed group planning, design, and craftsmanship.
At first, my students didn't fully grasp the significance of receiving these supplies, but as they began using them, their appreciation grew. They were thrilled to see their artwork displayed so professionally, and many felt a deep sense of pride in the recognition they received.
Looking ahead, I'm eager to explore new projects like origami and storytelling through their creativity. For now, the reusable supplies are safely stowed away, ready for the next exhibition. The paper cutter, however, is always on standby for future creations!”

Funded May 3, 2022The supplies for the sketchbook binding project really brought some creativity and access into my art classroom. First, the sketchbook project consisted of many projects based on silly prompts like "the Best Potato", "a Spaceship getting Doughnuts", "Something based on a triangle", "a dragon wearing a hat", etc.... This helped expand some of the students' scope of creativity and drawing skills. Second, although all of the paper and string were used up I still retain the 5 hole punch and the plastic needles. These will be used in future classes in variations of this project.
My students and I sewed and bound our artworks into this bring-home memorabilia. They first reacted with surprise and glee to the new piece of equipment. Many were eager to be able to used the 5 puncher. Although many students were not familiar with needles or the concept of sewing, several were and excited to show their skills or help others.
All my classes contributed these bound sketchbooks to the John Adams Middle School Art Showcase in June '22.
Currently my students are working on creating Calaveras and next semester I have an elaborate Earth Appreciation Through Art unit planned. This project is also on Donors Choose seeking maps, globes, and paint.
I thank you again for your trust in me and your amazing support to my students.”
