    Thank you for the differentiated classroom library books. Now, all my students have an opportunity to practice reading in our classroom with real books. Books on websites are okay, printed books from the computer in black and white are okay, but there is something wonderful about holding a real book in your hands. My students gasped when they saw our new book selection. Reading time in our classroom is a special time to begin with, but now, students are more focused and excited to read to self. Thank you again, for giving us this amazing opportunity.”

  • Quiet Reading Stations!

    Oh, technology, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. Our school is a technology school. We are a project-based learning school with one-to-one computers for students. We have intervention computer programs that help our students where they are struggling. Our issue happened to be headphones. Although we had one-to-one computers, we did not have headphones. One of the reading intervention programs has listening and reading applications for the students. When I am working in small groups and everyone's computer is giving directions at the same time, it gets loud and hard for students to focus.

    When we first got our headphones, students were excited and able to hear what they needed to hear to be successful in the intervention program. My small groups were so happy to be able to have a quiet atmosphere for our lessons. One of the students said loudly on our first day of using them, "Ms. Greenway, I can concentrate!" She had her headphones on while she said it. The quiet atmosphere is just what we needed.

    I have a couple of students that are on the spectrum and the noise from all the computers talking at once would make them feel anxious and irritable. I no longer see those two students panicking when it is time for guided reading stations. It is a calm and quiet learning environment. Just what we needed.”

  • Ready, Set, Read!

    Coming back into the classroom was an interesting mix of students not remembering how to interact with others, lack of empathy, and low to no reading ability. Because of the lack of social skills and empathy, classmates teased non-readers. During Covid, our students lost these skills, and some students lost the drive to learn, thus, creating a strange and new classroom environment.

    Thanks to your donation, we received a pack of books about kindness and a guided reading books it for beginning readers. Since we began reading the books about kindness, discussing, and having lessons about kindness, there was a shift in the classroom. Now we have a much kinder classroom. Students are beginning to remember how to be kinder and show empathy toward others. Instead of teasing a classmate that cannot read, they would ask the non-reading classmate, how they could help.

    Our new guided reading books for beginning readers has helped my lowest students begin there learning to read journey. One of the students said, "Ms. Greenway, I am so glad we got these books. I am not afraid to try anymore." She found her confidence. These books were just what she needed. The catalyst in her reading journey. Thank you for giving her this opportunity.”
