Funded Aug 15, 2023My students were incredibly excited and curious when they first encountered the Drunk Busters Distracted Goggles. The moment they put them on and tried to perform simple tasks, their reactions ranged from surprise to genuine concern. Many of them immediately recognized how significantly their focus and reaction times were compromised, which sparked a lot of meaningful discussions about the dangers of distracted driving.
As part of our class, students participated in a simulated exercise where they had to complete field sobriety tests, similar to those that a police officer might administer during a traffic stop for suspected drunk driving. These tests included walking in a straight line, balancing on one leg, and following a moving object with their eyes—all while wearing the goggles. The students quickly realized how difficult it was to perform these tasks under the simulated impairments, which brought home the seriousness of driving under the influence.
We also utilized these goggles was during our unit on safe driving practices. Students participated in a simulated driving exercise, where they attempted to navigate a course while wearing the goggles. This hands-on activity allowed them to experience firsthand how distractions, like using a phone or adjusting the radio, could impair their driving.
The materials provided by our generous donors have already made a significant impact, and we are excited to continue using them as part of our ongoing efforts to promote responsible behavior on the road.”
With gratitude,
