I can't wait to see this idea that is banging around in my head and turn it into a unit the students are excited to complete. I couldn't do this without your help.”

Adding Mystery to Book Club
Funded Nov 24, 2023Adding mystery to our book club is such a success. At the very beginning of this year I surveyed my students and asked them what they like to read. Almost every students says, "I don't like to read." I promise them that they just haven't found the right book, but they will, before the end of the year.
You helped me honor my promise to them. These books are page turners and raise real ethical issues that they discuss long after we finish the book. We are in the middle of reading the book you helped us get, Girl Forgotten, by April Henry and they are questioning whether it is fair or ethical to be entertained by true crime? They go back and forth on this issue. One day they think it can help solve a mystery and that should be a priority, another day they are focused on how it could hurt the friends and family of the victims. The fact that they are debating, arguing and most importantly thinking about these issues is more that I could have dreamed we would accomplish.
You have inspired me to add a new unit of an April Henry author study using literary circles to end our academic year. Of course I will have to put a new Donor's Choice request in, so be on the look out for my new project. Thank you all so much for helping to inspire my students to read!”

Books and Audio
Funded Nov 29, 2022My book shelves are freshly restocked and the students are taking them out weekly! I am excited to hear them ask me if they can have time to read during the day. I have many students who have been enjoying audiobooks as they read and the earphones you provided are a lifesaver! There is nothing that makes my heart sing more than when a student comes in and asks for book recommendations, especially this kids who are asking me for the very first time. Thank you so much for inspiring my students and hopefully start their journey as lifelong readers.”

The Classroom Basics
Funded Oct 26, 2022Creating a binder system that teaches our students organization, note taking and journaling is a game changer this year. Students papers are organized. We tell them what to take out and there is no scrambling for loose papers in their backpacks or losing their work. All graded papers with feedback are in their graded sections of their binders and can be used for portfolios for promotion or evidence of meeting their individual educational goals. The skills they are learning now will help them in high school and beyond. We are able to teach them a system of organization and because everyone has the same binder and sections, it is incorporated into our lesson. They are learning how to take notes but more importantly how to use those notes in the learning process. Thank you so much to all that contributed to this project. 150 binders, dividers and journals adds up to quite a bit of money and your help allowed us to teach and perfect skills that our students will need to be successful in the future.”

Funded May 26, 2022A simple organized binder can change the entire learning path for a student. After finding that our middle school ELA teachers were frustrated by the disorganization we saw by our students, we devised a plan to organize their learning. Each grade (6th, 7th and 8th) have has their own color coded binder. All students have the same supplies. Students needed to learn how to section off binders and organizer handouts and notes. Graded work is all in one place and can now be used as portfolios in their Student Led Conferences. It is making a world of difference. In fact look for this project to be posted again for next year. It is fantastic. Thank you.”

East Harlem Students Need the Harlem Renaissance
Funded Mar 20, 2022Having the children's books about notable people, places and events during the Harlem Renaissance was invaluable. The children's books infused so much color and richness to our unit. We used Harlem Summer as our anchor text and then explored so many different artists, poets, activists and writers from this time period. Adding the picture books enabled my highest learner to my lowest learner to find access and joy to the information. We toured Harlem and found the actual streets and building painted in some of the books. We examined murals about historical figures that were also referenced in the books you gave us. Thank you so much for helping us reach this goal. We studied this unit last spring and we will do it with our newest 7th graders this year. Your gift of books is a long lasting gift. Thank you.”
