Class Library Where Representation Matters
Funded May 2, 2023Students were immediately drawn to the books that you helped me purchase. These texts allowed some students to step into the worlds of others, while allowing still more students to see themselves represented in the world of literature.
Students have been able to use these books both in independent reading and in reading circles. They have been able to discuss a wide range of connections to literature and the wider world -- and in their own lives.
Most of all, students in my classes are developing a love of reading. Literature is a social pursuit, and they are talking about reading and which books to read next. Thank you so much for supporting the students in my classroom. You have really made a difference.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Denson
Access to Diverse Books for All Students
Funded Jun 21, 2022This year students in my class used the donated books to explore diverse authors through book groups. Students created a One Pager reflection on the ideas that they gained from reading their choice book. Many students chose to read Long Way Down, by Jason Reynolds and reflected on breaking the cycle of violence through understanding.
In my classroom, students used these books through Reading Groups. Several said that these books were the first books that, "This was the first book that I was forced to read that I liked!" Students have access to a class library and are encouraged to stretch themselves (by reading from diverse authors/topic) along with finding books that speak to them.
Thank you so much for helping me build access to diverse authors for my students. I know that these books will be enjoyed for years to come!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Denson
