Funded Jan 19, 2024My students were speechless, we are all so grateful for the books you have provided. As I mentioned before our library for group reading was not versatile. The students borrow books so they can read them at school and at home. Many students express that at the beginning of the year, they do not enjoy reading. So when discussing genres we talked about ones they would be interested in. This is how a book list was created.
The students meet three times a week to discuss the books during the literature circle. During this time the teacher models discussions or topics the students will be focusing on while in their small groups. This helps to foster reading comprehension, critical thinking, and student choice. Students are paired with others on the same reading levels or higher. Toward the end of the period, students set reading requirements for their next meeting. They love the fact that they are reading the same book and get to talk about it with their peers. They even do book walks or reviews for other classmates which intrigue curious readers.
The diverse book selection has caught the eyes of students who expressed "they do not enjoy reading it's boring." The English-language learners are pleased because they enjoy the bilingual book options! Many also enjoy bilingual books because they say it helps them practice Spanish. After all, this is the first year they are taking a foreign language. Students who only like graphic novels are reading the new books, and enjoying them!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Hinkson
