  • Healthy and Essential

    Funded Oct 26, 2024

Providing essential items like tissues, whiteboard markers, and pencils has significantly improved the learning environment for Title I ELD (English Language Development) students in kindergarten through sixth grade. These basic supplies address critical needs, creating a more inclusive, engaging, and effective classroom where students can focus on learning without unnecessary obstacles.

Before these supplies were introduced, many students faced challenges that interfered with their learning. A lack of tissues led to discomfort or distractions, insufficient whiteboard markers limited interactive lessons, and not having pencils created stress and feelings of unpreparedness. These gaps particularly affected ELD students, who already face language and academic barriers.

The addition of these resources transformed the classroom. Tissues ensured a healthier, more comfortable environment, while whiteboard markers allowed for hands-on activities that engaged students in subjects like reading, writing, and math. Pencils became a reliable tool for writing practice, enabling all students to participate confidently in their lessons. Together, these materials created a supportive space where students felt valued and prepared.

Students now use these supplies daily. Tissues help maintain personal hygiene and reduce classroom disruptions. Whiteboard markers have revolutionized interactive learning, especially for younger students practicing letter and word formation or upper-grade students solving math problems and building sentences in English. These tools allow for immediate feedback, promoting engagement and skill development.

Pencils remain essential for nearly every activity. Younger students use them to develop foundational writing skills, while older student's complete essays, notes, and projects that reinforce their language acquisition and critical thinking. Having these supplies readily available removes barriers to participation and fosters a sense of equality among students.

The students' reactions to the new supplies were overwhelmingly positive. Younger children were eager to use the markers to draw or practice writing, while older students expressed relief and gratitude. Many students commented on how having these materials made them feel supported and included. Their enthusiasm and immediate engagement reflected how these simple resources boosted their confidence and motivation.

With the foundation of essential supplies in place, the next steps involve using these materials to deepen learning. Interactive centers, project-based activities, and differentiated lessons tailored to ELD students can now thrive. For instance, whiteboard markers and pencils will support vocabulary building, sentence writing, and collaborative projects, while fostering creativity and teamwork.

To sustain this progress, ongoing efforts are needed to keep the classroom well-stocked. Partnerships with parents, community organizations, and businesses can help ensure continued access to these essential items, maintaining an environment where every student can succeed.

These basic supplies have removed obstacles, boosted engagement, and fostered a more inclusive classroom. By meeting students' basic needs, educators have created a space where ELD students feel valued and prepared to learn, setting the stage for academic and personal growth.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! You make a difference each day!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ezolt

  • Mentor Books Unite!

    Funded Jul 29, 2023

Getting reading books donated at a Title 1 school can have a significant impact on students and their learning. Here are a few ways it can benefit them:

    1. Access to Resources: Donated books provide students with access to a wider range of reading materials, increasing their exposure to different genres, topics, and cultures. This exposure helps expand their knowledge, vocabulary, and reading comprehension skills.

    2. Promotes Reading Engagement: Having a variety of reading materials available can spark students' interest and motivation to read. When students have books that align with their interests, they are more likely to engage in independent reading, leading to improved reading fluency and overall literacy development.

    3. Builds Confidence: Access to a diverse collection of books allows students to choose texts at their appropriate reading levels. This enables them to experience success and build confidence as they navigate through the texts independently or with support. Building confidence in reading can positively impact students' self-esteem and overall academic performance.

    4. Supports Language Acquisition: Donated books can provide valuable language input for English language learners (ELLs) in an English Language Development (ELD) class. Reading materials with rich vocabulary, sentence structures, and contextual cues can help ELLs expand their language skills, develop grammar awareness, and improve their comprehension abilities.

In our ELD class, reading instruction includes the following components:

    1. Vocabulary Development: I introduce and reinforce vocabulary words through reading activities, using visual aids, context clues, and word analysis strategies to support ELLs' understanding of new words.

    2. Comprehension Strategies: I guide students in using comprehension strategies, such as predicting, summarizing, and making connections, to enhance their understanding of the text. I also provide explicit instruction on decoding skills and reading comprehension strategies.

    3. Differentiated Instruction: Reading instruction in an ELD class often takes into account students' varying language proficiency levels. I use scaffolded support, such as pre-teaching key vocabulary, providing simplified texts, or offering graphic organizers, to help ELLs access and comprehend the reading material.

    4. Collaborative Activities: Reading in an ELD class often involves cooperative learning structures, such as partner reading or small group discussions. These activities promote peer interactions, language practice, and deeper comprehension through shared experiences and perspectives.

Overall, reading in an ELD class focuses on developing language skills, fostering comprehension, and nurturing a love for reading. Donated books play a crucial role in providing the necessary resources for effective reading instruction and supporting the language development of ELLs.

The students and I all Thank You for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ezolt

  • Colors Bring Our Work to Life!

    Funded May 11, 2023

My English Language Learners have intelligent minds and are always ready to learn no matter what assignments are given to them. Our printer was out of ink at the end of the school year, and we wanted to start the year with fresh ink toner. Because of the generosity of people like you we can do that! We use our printer daily. It's essential for us to have a printer with colored ink in our diverse classroom. We use the printer to publish print visuals and use the colored ink to create curricular worksheets for vocabulary concepts that I am currently teaching in my class. When students are learning English getting colored visuals in their hands is the best thing, we can do to facilitate their learning. This project provided ink for in-class printing. The printer allows for on-the-spot differentiation and lesson extensions. This ink allows lesson flexibility! Printer ink helped to create differentiated, engaging, and fun tasks for students to complete.”

  • Phonics Rules!

    Funded Aug 26, 2022

I cannot THANK YOU enough for your wonderful and thoughtful donation to "Phonics Rules!". WOW! I am excited to let you know that we've incorporated many of the phonics games into our daily learning. It is fun to watch the explicit phonics lessons I teach be brought to life and applied in these meaningful learning games. As a Reading specialist, each grade level I teach has a "Splash" game that goes with their lessons, and it is an absolute favorite of everyone's. The students beg me each and every day to play it when our lesson is over. Splash is a quick, easy way to introduce CVC words, sight-words, multisyllabic words and more—the super-fun pool-themed games sure do make a "splash"!

Thank you again for helping to facilitate our learning. These students are doing great things and growing their brains because of special people like you!”

  • Literacy Opens a Mind To a Million Possibilities!

    Funded Mar 14, 2022

Thank you again for your kindness and generosity! The students are beyond excited each day to use a new learning tool to expand our minds. The students cheered as we opened our box of goodies!

I have placed a new literacy activity each week as a center rotation. The students all get to learn and grow as they use the specific literacy activity of the week. I am so impressed with the language, grammar, and reading skills the students are learning while having fun. These different activities help solidify learning in each students minds.

I'm excited as our year continues, more students will be able to use our literacy activities to grow their brain. I look forward to using these literacy activities with students for years to come.”
