Suture Kits for Human Physiology Students
Funded Oct 20, 2024The new suturing kits created an engaging, hands-on activity in the classroom. We integrated suturing as part of the integumentary unit, which focus on the layers of the skin. The basic simple interrupted suturing technique allowed students to practice kinesthetic coordination with the instruments used. One particular moment that stands out was when my students had the opportunity to practice suturing on synthetic skin, simulating real-life medical procedures. It was a huge confidence boost for the students, as they could physically apply the theory and practice the technique.
Hands-on experience with professional-grade medical equipment really opens doors to careers in the medical field. There was an immediate sense of pride and motivation as students saw that the materials were brand new and in proper working condition. The moment they saw the instruments, their enthusiasm to learn and improve their skills soared, and they could not wait to begin practicing. The instruments were a tangible reminder that they were now part of a real-world medical practice, and that sense of professionalism and responsibility fueled their desire to learn more.
Looking ahead, the next steps for the students will be to refine their suturing techniques, focusing on precision, speed, and safety. We are planning a project where students will perform mock surgeries, practicing wound closure on fetal pigs under reasonable timed conditions. This exercise will help them build the confidence and competence needed for real medical environments. Additionally, we will incorporate more advanced suturing techniques, such as those for different tissues and wounds, expanding their knowledge of the medical field. The goal is for students to leave this project with a deep understanding of suturing, as well as practical skills they could apply in a clinical or emergency setting.”

Funded Apr 22, 2022Mahalo for your generous donation! We've been holding after school ukulele get-togethers every other Wednesday. We started small, but we're growing as the word gets out. We have plans for students to share songs from their native countries- Samoa, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines, and Micronesia and to invite other teachers to teach the group a song. The ukuleles have been and will continue to be used at meetings of our school's Micronesian student club as well.
Students have been excited to have access to ukuleles. Some have borrowed them to practice for their ukulele class or as a reward for getting good grades. I keep one or two out in my office and they have been a great way to start conversations with students and build relationships with them.
Your donation has enriched our school in a meaningful way. Many students have musical ability but no access to an instrument and your donation has provided them with the opportunity to explore their talents.”
