The Alley Garden on Pitman!
Funded Mar 23, 2022The students at The Capitol Encore Academy have really benefited from the alley Garden. When we first did the project, we thought that it would be great for Science in showing the students how to grow vegetables, herbs ,and other gardening items. Once we received the items, we realized that gardening could be used across different subjects.
For math, planting in the Alley garden allowed students to have hand-on practice with array models which is a strategy to help them with both multiplication and division. Students were able to use their hands to make holes in the dirt to plant seeds but they were organized in an array model. For example, we needed 2 rows of 5. Once they dug the holes, they were able to realize that they needed 10 seeds.
The alley garden provides an alternate learning space for students and gives them an opportunity to learn in real life situations. This allows the students to actually apply what they learned to real world situations.
Thank you again for all of your support of our students and helping them to develop 21st century skills, allowing them to collaborate and work with their peers, and the ability to learn in a non traditional way.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Leigh
