My students enjoy coming to the music room for their weekly music therapy sessions. They all have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and range in ages and abilities. Music is often the highlight of their week. They love to dance, sing, move and play a variety of rhythm instruments while engaging with thematic props. Music therapy sessions are student-centered, as children are free to express themselves and participate in music experiences that promote development in socialization, communication and movement skills. Each student has a uniqueness that is beautiful, expressive and amazing to watch. These students have a lot to offer. Music therapy is one such medium that helps them to establish connections which assist them in generalizing concepts and skills learned within our program and that are essential to functioning in many aspects of life.
