  • Skeleton's Back to School

    Funded Aug 8, 2022

Thank you so much for contributing towards my project! My students love the skeleton and they all submitted name suggestions. I had all 180 students vote and they decided on the name "Indiana Bones". The skeleton has been a great talking point for many of my students and they enjoy seeing the seasonal decor (a hat for halloween, a scarf and Santa hat for Christmas). Some students like taking pictures with Indiana Bones and he has become an integral part of the classroom.

Currently I am still covering photosynthesis and other systems that do not include the human body, but I am excited for the spring semester when we will be diving into the human aspect of biology. I will be setting aside some time to cover the various cells of the human body in addition to the typical animal cell and organelle lessons. I plan to have a project centered around muscle origins, insertions, and actions when we cover the steps of a muscle contraction so students can see how each muscle is important and different. Students will be responsible for identifying these parts relevant to their particular muscle on Indiana Bones.

Thank you for being a part of my classroom journey.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. De Rego

  • Help Mr. Bones Come Home!

    Funded Feb 21, 2022

Thank you so much for donating to my project. There were issues with the original resources I selected running out of stock, but I am happy to report I was able to purchase many wonderful supplies for my classroom. The students had a lot of fun building different molecules such as water and glucose using the molecular modeling kits. Whenever they saw gray boxes on the table before class they got very excited! In place of the unavailable skeleton, I purchased a heart model that has removable parts to view the interior chambers. The students were constantly asking to use it during their free time and it prompted many productive conversations! Last but not least, I bought many packs of colored pencils. They love drawing and as you can see in the attached photos, my biology students drew the different organelles and stages of meiosis and mitosis. My chemistry/physics students made a color-coded diagram of the electron orbitals and the proton-neutron distribution within the nucleus of various elements. I look forward to using these materials in my classroom again this year with a whole new class of freshmen! Thank you again for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. De Rego
