Students in my wilderness skills class learn by doing. The premise is for students to learn the basic techniques and skills for wilderness survival and a greater connection and knowledge of their natural environment through tracking, sensory awareness and nature observation. My students learn how to build simple shelters, find and purify water in a wilderness setting, how to create a safe campfire and fire by friction and finally gain the knowledge to recognize hazards, plants, animals and a working knowledge of their local landscape and place. Through the Wilderness Skills Class, students gain a sense of self-sufficiency, and use critical thinking and problem solving skills that are often missing from a traditional classroom setting and curriculum. Our classroom is most often outdoors, where the students' senses are engaged. Students are shown a skill and challenged with hands on projects such as survival shelter building, animal tracking and identification, creating a fire by friction without modern tools, building a natural water filter, bow making...etc.
