Earlier this year, we had a power outage at our school. There was no backup power source in our classroom. One of the teachers across the hall had some battery-powered lanterns and flashlights that she let her students use. Since this is my first year teaching at this particular school, I was unprepared for this type of situation. Having the lanterns and flashlights for my students to use, will create a more cheery environment in which to learn if this happens again. In addition to the light, having the microscope as we study matter in science, will open a whole new world to these young 2nd graders. Imagine their looking at water with a microscope for the first time and discovering that there are things in the water that are only visible with a microscope! It is exciting! Another item that will be helpful to my students is having more base ten "flat" blocks. Currently, we do not have enough of them. Some students are greatly helped by manipulatives like these blocks. We have sufficient units and rods (ones and tens), but we are short of flats (hundreds). As I come closer to the time of teaching them to add three-digit numbers like 356 +268. it will be so helpful to have these blocks! I have seen students who failed these tests using other methods, score 100% using manipulatives to solve the problems!
