  • Motivating Digital Materials

    Funded Sep 20, 2023

Thanks so much for funding my project to get digital speech therapy materials for my students. I can't wait to look for more educational programs, games and activities to help my elementary and preschool students with their pronunciation and language development. Having engaging new materials always gets them motivated to visit my room! Your generosity is very much appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Detrano

  • A Printer to Promote Communication

    Funded Mar 29, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous donation. I am so excited to create materials to help my students with special needs communicate in the classroom and all throughout the day. Having a printer at school rather than trying to get everything done at home will be such a gamechanger. Thanks so much!”

    Ms. Detrano

  • Learning Vocabulary in Mini Worlds

    Funded Mar 2, 2022

Thank you so much for your support with this project! My students love using the miniature items you helped to purchase to create stories and practice their sounds. I use the figures with my students working on sound articulation to make sentences and stories. They are so much more motivated -- their eyes light up when I pull out the boxes with the miniatures! One of my preschoolers with limited language loves the letter W, and when he sees the W miniatures he requests to look at them and names each one! Other activities we do with these materials on a regular basis are hiding them around the room and describing where we find them, using them to represent characters and object from picture books to help with comprehension, sorting them by categories, colors, and initial sounds, and describing their basic features, like where we might find them and what they can be used for. The same materials can be used in so many ways.

My students continue to enjoy these materials, learning new words and making conceptual connections while also having fun. Thank you so much for helping make this happen!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Detrano

My students and I work in small groups on early vocabulary and asking for what students want and need, as well as practicing their sounds so they can be understood by teachers and peers. My students have a variety of disabilities and many also struggle with identifying feelings and understanding others' perspectives. My students are fascinated with miniature objects representing their world, such as people figurines and doll house items. With these objects, we can create scenes to practice skills like prepositions (the frog is behind the tire) and describing (I want to put the big red chair by the small green frog). We can also practice speaking clearly with sounds that are hard for them to say, for example using three miniature items that start with S and pulling them out of a tub of dried rice while we say the words. To work on emotions, we can put the people figurines in different situations and talk about how they might feel and what they might do next. The possibilities are endless!
