All children pass through specific stages when learning math concepts. During their youngest years or when they struggle to learn new math content, students need hands-on materials and manipulatives to be able to experience these math concepts. If they can interact with materials such as counters, place value blocks, and fraction tiles, students can have a concrete understanding of how math works by representing it in a hands-on way. With these new math manipulatives, my students will be able to grasp math content with which they have previously struggled because they will be able to use their hands to create representations that make sense to them. Each manipulative set listed was selected with particular math skills in mind that these students need in order to move up to the next level. In addition, being able to have free access to whatever type of manipulative they need to make sense of the math problem will be liberating to students who are trying hard to come up with creative and unique ways to explain their thinking or who have a different way of thinking about problem-solving. These hands-on experiences can make all the difference with my math intervention lessons so that my students can rise up and show their true potential.
