Each day, we will be writing in math. We will explore language and literacy in math by explaining how to solve math problems and converting numbers and symbols into words and sentences and vice versa. Pencils and composition notebooks will be used by students for a daily "diary style" entry for bell work and reflection of math concepts. Students will have to put into words, strategies that they use for solving problems. Calculators are used by students to solve higher level math problems that involve calculation, so we can focus more on problem solving strategies and higher level critical thinking concepts and not on simple calculation. Students will also use dry erase markers to work problems on individual dry erase boards. This increases their engagement in the material. Many of our students do not have sufficient means in order to buy these basic materials and have them consistently in the classroom. When students have to write out an explanation of the strategy of how to solve math problems, it increases their understanding and mastery of the problem. It also helps them develop problem solving strategies that can be used in other areas of the curriculum. Students will also understand that math is a language, and the greatest mathematician in the world is nothing if they cannot communicate their findings effectively.
