I have a wide range of readers in my first grade classroom. Some are still working to master letter sounds and sight words, while others are reading at a sixth grade level, and then there are all levels in between! COVID-19 has prevented some students from spending time learning the basic phonemic awareness and phonics skills that are vital to beginning reading success. On the other end, being in and out of school has prevented my higher readers from learning how to have meaningful conversations about books with their peers. Quality differentiated reading instruction is critical for my first graders to reach their full potential as readers. The chapter book sets I am requesting will bring rich and diverse literature to our book clubs, where I will facilitate discussions about story elements, connections, and questions students have when they read. The literacy center activities will provide my students who need repetition with phonics and phonemic awareness skills with independent learning opportunities.
