The students in my classroom need social skills and life skills just as much as they do academics. COVID-19 has created a deficit in the amount of time our kids have had to be in school and learn what it means and what it looks like to interact appropriately with others. Student's with disabilities have trouble understanding and identifying their emotions as well as the emotions of others. Having the materials available to teach these students how to express themselves, communicate and interact with others is one of my top priorities. My student's have a very limited attention span and can be extremely active. Providing an environment that is fun and inviting makes them more excited to sit down and listen to a story, play a game, or participate in group time. When there are items in the class that a student really wants to use it gives them motivation to do the right thing. They also have to learn to be flexible and take turns with the special items; for example only a few of them can sit on the couch at one time so they will have to learn to wait.
