  • Just Mercy Curriculum Addition

    Thank you so much for helping my classes to obtain copies of Just Mercy. I am expanding my non-fiction curriculum with these stories of judicial injustice and the fight that continues on for many of those unfairly incarcerated or sentenced to death. As my students sit in their integrated classrooms with friends of many races, they often do not understand the struggles that preceded them or the difficulties that persist today. This is our next book for the year, and I know how interested they will be to watch the journeys of these real people and follow the progress of the author who has done so much to help the underrepresented in the American South.”

  • Classroom Library Expansion and Conference Area

    I thank you for the generous donations to my classroom library. Students are practicing their independent reading on a daily basis due to the wealth of books that have been added to our collection.

    Reading is my classroom is an independent and corporate activity. Students begin their class period with a few minutes of independent reading, and then they may check out those books from our classroom library to take home as well.

    Our books cover a wide variety of reading levels and interests. I have regular reading conferences with my students to give them opportunities to discuss their chosen books and set goals for the number of pages they plan to cover. Your donations have given me the opportunity to provide students with many reading choices. Again, thank you for this opportunity.”

The books will help students who have fallen behind during the pandemic and require additional reading materials to bolster their independent reading skills. Many students are quarantined for several weeks but may not have sufficient access to books or internet. A classroom library will give students access to a wider rage of books geared toward their interest level and lexile. Books may also be sent home for students who are unable to leave their homes for an extended period. Access to a wide variety of books will be available to all students in my classroom. Students in the classroom should always have an interesting, new read readily available. Students at home can request a particular title which could be sent home during long absences. Student progress should not be limited by a lack of books available to them. My hope is that these titles will be widely read by students in the classroom and at home. My appeal to Donors Choose is that independent reading is seen as valuable and essential. I sincerely hope that the selection committee will see the value of my proposal and provide funding for the selected bookcases and books to fill them.
