The last year my 5th graders had a normal school year was their 2nd grade year. Upon returning to the classroom setting, we have had to adapt to COVID-19 restrictions. These restrictions have deeply affected the physical classroom environment. We need a classroom environment that will foster student engagement and effective learning during these challenging times. I believe flexible seating will increase student engagement and allow for effective learning. Flexible seating, such as wobble stools and wobble cushions, will impact our classroom environment in many ways. It will improve physical health. Children need to move and flexible seating will allow them to wiggle and wobble. Flexible seating will keep their minds more alert and focused. Flexible seating will also improve comfort. When a student is comfortable they are more likely to be focused and productive. In addition, flexible seating will help with student communication and collaboration. Lastly, flexible seating will help students with ADHD. Students with ADHD benefit from the sensory input. It will allow them move freely while still focusing on the lesson or assignment. Students will be less disruptive if they are able to move.
