Over distance learning, it became apparent that students were not learning math but rather mimicking it. I never liked that aspect of the classroom and knew there had to be a more effective way. I ran across "Building a Thinking Classroom" and was blown away. Why haven't we been teaching math this way all along? I had not been allowing the students to experience productive struggle. I ran to them and answered their questions without hesitation, and sometimes took their pencil and worked the problem for them. I was not empowering them but crippling them instead, which became evident over distance learning. By getting these Whiteboards and Expo markers, the students will become teachers for one another. They will group around their whiteboard, and with their small groups, they will work through problems together to arrive at a solution they all feel is correct. By having the ability to stand and collaborate, they build their understanding instead of relying on mine. To test this approach to math, I taped some tablecloths to my wall and watched and listened to the students problem-solve together. They were teaching one another. They were helping each other. They were talking through problems and encouraging one another to keep going. I saw students' confidence grow. I saw those students who tried to be hidden shine. These students were coming alive and taking others with them. I want this to be a permanent part of our classroom. I do not wish this desire to learn and teach others to disappear. That is why I am asking for these Whiteboards and Expo markers...I want them to know this is a place to explore, learn, and shine. Thank you for your consideration!!
