All 'Hands-On' Deck Math Exploration

Funded Nov 5, 2022

Thank you so much for the new math manipulatives (All Hands On Deck) you put into the hands of my students in our resource math class. My students have been using the magnetic fraction bars and circles as we progressed through our fraction unit. Students that have been too shy or lacked confidence have suddenly started volunteering to use the magnetic fractions to work problems and answer them- even in front of their peers- and that is huge for these kiddos who have differing degrees of abilities. I have one 4th grader who was especially excited when she finally understood equivalent fractions by being able to compare fractions with the magnetic bars and circles!

When my boxes of new materials arrived, I left them unopened on the table so that they could share in the excitement of opening them together with me. Opening the boxes together and unpacking our new goodies truly helped ignite their curiosity about how they were going to get to use them in class. They immediately wanted to open EVERYTHING and start using the Magnitiles, volume cubes, magnetic fraction pieces, geometric shapes and so on! Kids that really struggle with math were suddenly interested in "what are we going to do with these things?".

We are going back through units as we review for the end of the year and my students have specifically asked for their manipulatives to use to practice things like finding volume and area. Again, we are so thankful that they have these tools to build a better foundation in math!
