Students at any age want to experience independence and success in school. In my classroom, my kindergarten students also have the need for mobility. Their little active bodies are not meant to stay in one location for an extended amount of time during the course of the school day. Likewise, literacy skills are a necessity for success in school and adulthood. Alternative seating and a listening station can help meet my students' needs. This type of seating will offer my students the opportunity to choose what seating works best for their own little bodies as they build their literary skills. Students can move to a location in the classroom where they can work best during literacy small groups. Wobbly stools and scoop rockers provide movement to help students stay engaged while in the classroom. When my students are engaged, they are learning. Listening stations would be another great tool to aid in literacy success in our classroom. Students are again provided with choice. Students can choose what book is appealing to them and move to a location to listen comfortably. Being read to out loud will help my students increase fluency, build vocabulary, and expose my ESL students to English. Alternative seating and a listening station would be a welcome addition to our classroom.
