As my students have been in person for almost a year, and we've had what seems to be the "new normal" for a school year, I have noticed they are more eager than ever to learn and create with their peers. If you were to step into my classroom, you would see a room full of students who are engaged with each other and the material. I believe in the power of hands-on and project-based learning. This is more important than ever, given the recent things students have had to persevere through. Our final project of the year is a research project where students explore and engage in subjects they are excited about, with an emphasis on how they can take their passions and make a difference. We will read 'The Parker Inheritance' as a class and students will be asked to do small research projects throughout about the impacts of racism and hate, and how those things have either changed or stayed the same throughout the past 70 years. To wrap up our research unit, and their seventh-grade year, students will then pick any topic they are passionate about, research it, and create a project to show other students at our school, teachers, and parents. This project is based on the idea that everyone has something they are passionate about and how they can use their passions to work toward making a change in our world.
