Printmaking has helped shape culture in all parts of the world. Originally used as a form of communication, printmaking is a valued artistic medium with unique technical qualities. I want my students to be able to explore this artistic process through one of the five types of printmaking called Monoprinting. The terms monoprint and monotype describe an image that can only be printed once in its original state, unlike other forms of printmaking. This technique is also the most painterly of the printmaking processes. The student will use acrylic paint with an added glaze to prolong the drying time to paint an image onto the Gelli plate. They will then lay a piece of paper on top of the plate and run a brayer over the plate to create a unique, one-of-a-kind print. They can repeat these steps adding stencils, leaves, string, and other items to add texture and layers to their print. By having access to Monotype printing, students will learn about the history of printmaking while I encourage them to continue the creative process and make it into their own style of art.
