After learning about the elements of art and principles of design, my beginning and advanced art classes explore mixed media through the purchase of acrylic paint, watercolor, pastel, marker, colored pencil, and pen and ink. Sometimes we add in extra textures and layers by way of yarn, found objects, magazines, glue, and recyclables. Each student is given a large piece of 14 ply poster board. Before starting, students must submit a rough sketch of their chosen subject or theme which includes the elements of art and demonstrates their understanding of the principles of design. Students get to choose their subject matter while experimenting with how different art media works. This is a fun challenge in which trial and error assists students in the artmaking process. They learn a great deal from working with various media by sampling so many different types. My mixed media project gives students freedom to choose their own subject while employing different art mediums to represent that subject. This can be very therapeutic yet challenging at the same time. My students come away with a better understanding of how they can use different mediums on future projects. This project also expands their knowledge and appreciation of how other artists have used specific mediums in their own artwork.
