This will be the foundation of a project-based learning unit in which students will ultimately solve self-chosen problem for diverse youth worldwide. The novels will be used to create understanding, empathy, and background knowledge of what students in less-privileged situations are experiencing. Using their new knowledge and empathy, as well as research, they will work in teams to formulate ways they can solve a problem for diverse youth in their community, country, and the world, and then implement their plan, producing real-world results and making a difference in others' lives. After finding a problem they can solve for these youth and innovating a solution they can reasonably work towards, students will use the 3D printer, other STEM sources available, and donated supplies they collect to produce solutions for supporting these youth. The 3D printer will also be used to create an in-class model that will support learning goals and self reflection by giving students a hands-on, visual scale of their progress.
