My goal is to use these materials to aid in the increase of focus and maintain the concentration of all of my students. Our diverse class consists of students with many different struggles: A.D.H.D, Autism, and emotional disabilities. I have chosen a variety of seating as well as suggested materials to create a "Calming Corner". My list also includes a small tent to provide a degree of privacy to the corner. These tools focus specifically on students with sensory, emotional, and focus needs, however, they will positively impact the entire class! ​A "Calming Corner" is an area provided for students to "escape" for a brief amount of time to "calm down" or "deescalate" without becoming frustrated to the point of disrupting other students' learning. They enter semi-private space, set the timer, and then choose from a menu of strategies and tools to regain emotional stability. This area can help prevent disruptions to other students' learning as well as reinforce healthy ways to "deal" with overstimulation. Use of this space can also reinforce desired behaviors. The "focus increasing" seating is meant to help students “get their wiggles out" while maintaining focus as they work. I was careful to pick the least noisy and distracting items so that learning was the center of the student’s attention. Even though these items were chosen to aid with specific needs, they will be available to all students. Any child can use the calming corner if they are feeling overwhelmed, angry, or sad. The seating on my list combined with seating that I have personally purchased is enough for each of my students. The goal is to teach all students healthy ways to move past feelings that they struggle in, and find different ways to adapt and BLOOM!
