Each item on this list was chosen to create reading centers that students will benefit from and actively participate in. Since COVID-19, students have fallen behind academically. Many students come into my classroom with the mindset that reading is "boring," and they are quickly mistaken. In the age of technology and instant gratification, I have had to get creative with ways to keep students focused and enjoy reading. The reading games will enhance that engagement with competition and fun. By donating to my project, you are filling in the gaps created by COVID-19 by building student confidence and motivation to become skilled readers. I will use the literature teaching charts during whole group instruction, where I will model how to use the graphic organizers to paraphrase, summarize, and break-down the text to ensure understanding. Then, we will transition to centers. Each center will be organized in a bin on the storage cart with all the materials needed to complete the reading activity. Each reading group will have a bin that holds leveled readers based on their reading level. Instructional time is precious, and the organization of the bins will cut down on the transition time. Developmentally, 5th graders are highly motivated by interactions with their peers, which is why I have chosen game-style center activities. Board games and file folder games allow for a hands-on experience that doesn't happen with worksheets.
