I am currently teaching PreCalclulus and AP Calculus. For the past two years, we have noticed a need for additional remediation with our math learners due to the interruption in learning that COVID-19 continues to cause. To prepare learners for their next mathematics course, we will offer a summer Math camp! Math Camp gives our learners the opportunity to close learning gaps in mathematics that have been created by the interruption in education by COVID-19. It will be open to learners entering 7th, 8th and 9th grade free of charge. Camp will consist of four days with each group meeting for 2 hours. Each group will cover essential standards and concepts requested by the 7th, 8th and 9th grade teachers. Concepts will be teacher created and presented through a variety of methods ranging from card sorts, games, whiteboard activities, projects, and presentations. Card stock, colored paper, PostIt notes, pens and laminating pouches will be used to create projects and card sorts. These activities will provide multiple ways for learners to engage in learning and increase their understanding of mathematics concepts. Dry erase boards and markers will provide opportunities for learners to work in a group to create a collaborative environment to help drive learning of math concepts. Jumbo x-y-coordinate grids will allow learners to work collaboratively to graph equations, work on transformations and create activities and games for their classmates. Dry erase table will give learners the opportunity during break out sessions to play with mathematics and manipulatives. Binders will provide organization for the activities and manipulatives used for each group. Cards and 24 game will be used to reinforce math facts and concepts through games. Journals will be given to each camper to document their learning providing a resource for future courses.
