This grant request is for novel sets for my ELA classroom for grades 8-12. In accordance with the Oklahoma ELA and Reading standards, I encourage my students to read fiction and non-fiction novels on a consistent basis. I do this to motivate my students to find something in each novel that inspires them to go beyond what they know and learn from it. I want to increase their boundaries and move them into new worlds. New horizons and different cultures are what we find in books, new and old. The standards request that students identify characteristics of genre and analyze how they enhance comprehension of fiction and nonfiction. So, by reading together these novel sets my students will be able to share their new knowledge of culture and genre and this will not only increase their love of reading, it will also enhance their literacy skills. My students' vocabulary and writing skills also progress when they read. If we have shared text sets then we can work on the vocabulary together and meet the standards for the reading and writing process. This will help to make up lost time from students being quarantined due to Covid and other illnesses. When students are at home, they can still read and participate in learning about our world, today and yesterday. I feel these books will also increase their own empathy and comprehension of a world they haven’t met yet.
