With all the clicking, typing, and screen watching of both daily social interactions as well as required coursework, students are often technologically burnt-out. Though technology can certainly be an effective educational tool, students crave time for creativity and reflection. Many have become even more introverted than before, and others just need a break from notifications, constant distractions, and unending deadlines. A quiet space to read, reflect, and gain insight to the unique and diverse perspectives of the French-speaking world will support students who wish to rest from the call of technology, while encouraging these intellectual explorers to travel through endless pages of literary discovery without leaving our classroom. Travel and other forms of cultural exchange are currently limited due to the ongoing pandemic, creating the need for additional ways to bring language and literature to life within the walls of our learning environment. Currently, our classroom collection of French books and magazines is mostly in storage, as the classroom lacks adequate bookshelf space and teen-friendly flexible seating. The additional seating options and novice-level French reading materials will allow even our most beginning students the opportunity to fall in love with life-long language learning through literacy.
