One of the resources that would be beneficial (as the math teacher) is good calculators. Right now, we have a handful of poorly built calculators. It is not uncommon to hear middle school students struggle with their simple math facts. At this point in their mathematical education they should be beyond that, but being held back by the elementary math facts stops them from being able to focus on the further algorithms and patterns that they learn. I would love to have reliable calculators that I can teach them to use to be successful. If they are able to use them properly, then they don’t have to be halted by trying to figure out what the square root of something is or by adding a negative and positive number together. Calculators, as well as a way to organize them, can help my students for years to come feel a little more successful in math, where so many don’t feel successful. As I mentioned before, other issues that I have seen increase since the pandemic began are the interpersonal and behavioral issues. Right now, my classroom has run mostly smoothly, but I’ve wanted to implement a management system involving SMART goals, that is very involved upfront, but can help with the expectations of how we all need to act in a classroom and lead to better academic success as well. This involves a few organizational items to get this system up and running.
