High interest reading material in print and digital form allows students to make real connections to the world around them. Reading material that is visually appealing to my tween students that are used to fast-paced videos, advanced technology, and instant access to information will help them stay more focused in class. Effects of the pandemic are widespread. We see this in the classroom with students having shorter attention spans due to being inundated with social media and lack of time in the classroom, students needing to be more self-sufficient as they are home alone more due to school shutdowns, quarantines, and illness. Research shows that providing students with lively, engaging, and appropriate magazines students are more inspired to read. Studies also show that by allowing a student access to magazines, we encourage a useful skill - critical thinking and close reading skills. This will follow them into adulthood. Access to short articles like that in a magazine allows students to finish reading an entire article without becoming bored or overwhelmed due to a short attention span. I will be able to keep my students engaged in our standards-based learning and provide them with real world learning right in my classroom, all while reaching students at home that may need to be doing distance learning.
