Reeds are essential (and an ongoing expense) to creating sounds on woodwind instruments. Our students come from lower socioeconomics and struggle with the maintenance of good reeds that will work on their mouthpieces. Reeds are also made out of cane and unfortunately break easily. While we always discuss the importance of reed care and give strategies for longer-lasting reeds, our young students typically need a new reed (especially in light of covid and germ/bacteria) every 2 weeks. This can become expensive for our parents. Reeds are sold in boxes of 10 and are THE direct cause of vibrations that make a sound on a clarinet, saxophone, oboe, or bassoon. Without the reed, no vibrations occur. Many times, our students are not able to participate in playing their instruments simply because they can't afford a reed. They are also restricted in playing because of having an old reed that simply won't function any more. We would like to have reeds available for those students in need so that they too can perform, learn, play, and create all the sounds that the rest of their classmates are playing in a rehearsal or for a performance.
