I am a school counselor to approximately 360 young children in a public school. My school consists of Head Start, Pre-K, and Kindergarten. Being a 3 to 6 year old in a typical time period can be tough and come with some big emotions; however, being a 3 to 6 year old, during a pandemic, is even harder. Most of our students do not remember or know this world without Covid-19. Our children have big emotions and many struggle naming them and then regulating these emotions. If funded, my grant would allow me to help children with this issue. This is my first year as a school counselor, so unfortunately my resources are limited. I want to be able to provide a safe space for my students where they can use sensory items to help them calm down. I often get called to come help a child who is melting down. Giving them just a small break where they can play with a light panel, fidget toy, or anything that is engaging and sensory based, can change their entire day. Our students come in to our schools with so much going on at home and giving them a space with items that help them calm those worries and where they feel welcomed and safe can make their entire day better, which in turn helps them be able to learn and work hard during the school day.
